The most popular car colour of 2016 isn’t white, or silver. The most popular colour won’t make road safety advocates too happy, because car buyers are increasingly choosing black paint for their new vehicle.

Here’s a breakdown of the colour’s popularity in the UK so far in 2016:

  • Black is the most popular colour in the convertibles market with 21.5% of overall market sales
  • 28% of executive cars sold today are black
  • 22% of the mid-range car market favours black
  • 23% of the sports market is geared up for black
  • A quarter (25%) of SUVs that leave sales yards have black paintwork

However, there were a couple of market segments where black wasn’t the top choice. City cars are predominantly red (18%) followed by white (17%) and black (16%).

While white had become the colour of choice over the past few years, but black seems to be back with a vengeance.

Experts believer that black represents a safe choice for motorists as, along with silver and grey, these so called safe colours consistently maintain their value when sold as used.

Interestingly, black is often sited as the hardest colour to keep clean – but that’s a topic for another day!
